What I've been up to

I haven't forgotten you bloggy blog. I've been busy with an amount of things, the two photos above are proof!. The first image is a watercolor for the White Space graphic novel's cover. And below it are two laser cut wooden toys for my event project. I painted the mdf board before laser cutting so they looked nice a clean. A bunch of the little birds are going to get made up in different colours and placed in my hair, which will be teased to all hell to look like a bird's nest, and photographed by my good friend Matt. So that'll be fun, photos soon.

You Will Never Know

I've recently spent five years of my life working at a super market posed as a Deli Assistant. What I was really doing? Collecting characters for a comic, although at first it was simply a way of calming down after a particularly annoying customer. It strange to think that these two will have absolutely no idea that I found them hilarious or agitating, and that after serving them, drew them onto a post-it notes which I pocketed. These post-its accumulated and now I'm writing them all into the comic I'm working on. It reminds me a bit of when I was in Japan. My friend Clinton and I were on a bullet train headed for Osaka when the train paused to let people off. The train was on a rail suspended high above a town, there where a few people walking far down below. "Watch this." Clinton said as he turned on his wicked super zooming camera and honed in on a Japanese girl, about our age, who was chatting to her friend far down below. He took a photo of her just as she cracked this gorgeous smile, before the train sped away. I have this photo. I am in New Zealand, in my room at my parents house and I have this photo. This does my head in. She could never know. These people I've drawn will never know. This scares me. How many photos are there of me out there? Or drawings? I hope I'm never dick enough to someone serving me who is really a cartoonist in disguise.

Moral of the story?
Don't be a dick
Bigger moral of the story
You will never know

EDIT: Clinton is not a creepy dude! He was showing off his powerful super awesome camera.
Really, I'm the creepy one for keeping the photo. So just so we're clear, Clinton = quite a cool dude. Becky = creepy cartoonist who will draw you if you piss her off

Colour Me Monday (Math)

I got me a charmer. This week's colour palette has a good mix of girly and boy colours I think. To be honest I don't think there are such things as girl colours and boy colours. My favourite colours are the ones found on a common piece of moss so..
Anyway that's Math for you. A conversation between a friend of mine, Steph, and my boyfriend.

Watercolour Mushroom

I started digitally painting it as well as using watercolours on the original. So far I like the watercolours best. Nearly finished. Click for full size.

Dwarf Fortress Dwarf Baby

Practicing drawing men. I think I got his nose quite well. There was a discussion online as to what Dwarf Fortress Dwarf babies looked like. I decided to draw my interpretation

Band Practice (contains profanity)

This was done for a friend. A little gathering of ours. Sorry for the swears, it was completely unnecessary I know, but it was a bit of fun. This is a style I've actually never tried before so that was a bit of a learning curve. The palette I used was a bit bigger than my usual but I don't think I ended up using all the colours and instead added a few creams. Click to enlarge.

Sweet. Tomorrow I'll be drawing bearded dwarf children so that'll be fun. Send me a link if you use any of the palettes, I'd like to see what you've done with them.

Conversation at the party the other night. It was hilarious. There where some pretty good conversations that night.

A New Style

You might be able to tell that I'm working with the same colour pallet from Monday. I really love this one. If anyone uses it give me a yell, I want to see what you get up to. This is what I've been working on today, sort of merging two of my drawing styles together which is working quite well I think. Merging tablet with sketches from my notebook. Hopefully be finished by tonight.

Colour Me Monday (Night on Mars)

Today's colour pallet is called Night on Mars. A special treat! I'm going to upload my drawing process. So first we begin with a sketch. I used Charlize Theron from "snow white and the huntsman" for a reference point for my protagonist.

Eyebrows

A conversation I had with some friends at a party. If its a little hard to read with my sketchy handwriting I've scripted it below. I've changed it a bit so it makes sense. I was writing it out in a rush before I forgot what was said, apparently I didn't take a good look at my grammar.

Bex "See, I don't know what my hair colour is anymore."
Becky (me) "Is it dark? Eyebrows are a good indicator"
Kathleen "Really? Then what's my natural hair colour? Bald??"

And then we all laughed

Idle Afternoon

Just doodling this afternoon when I know I should be doing assignments. I should really start working on drawing men better. Beardy men.
Last night all the dogs in the neighborhood were barking their lungs out. It made me think the Terminator was coming to get me. I just lay in bed for hours. Just lying there waiting for him to come and kill me. The weird thing is, is that I wasn't bothered whether he came or not. I must have been half asleep thinking these weird things.

He never came.
Then again, I'm not Sarah Conner.

Five Years

SO I've been working in a Deli for almost five years now. FIVE YEARS. you might ask yourself why the deli girls have stayed there. Well the answer is simple. We all think we look like this:

Spotted on the Hunt For Faces

David Attenborough voice:  When spotted, the artist feints interest in almost anything in another direction. Particularly vulnerable in a playground setting, as an artist might be mistaken for a pedophile. To avoid confrontation the artist will break itself loose from his usual leisurely drawing pace, to a quick, frantic sketch. Approach with cation as they are often shy about their work. A bad reaction from the subject matter and the artist will find other spots to visit, often never visiting that site again for fear of recognition.

Sketching Daily

Got really inspired. There are some really talented artists out there. This is what I've been working on for the last half an hour. My character, Truck, in a mushroom land. Doesn't look very happy.

Thats probably me projecting; I've not had a very good day. I've given up caffeine, which was my drug of choice. Now I get these killer headaches so I've been using other drugs to relieve that.

But the drugs don't work.
I would love to be able to drink coffee again. Maybe when winter starts. Enough of my rambling, I'll get back to work and finish this off for you.

The Humans Have Forgotten You

Moody Moon is a character of mine, I drew inspiration from Hellboy for his face. He even had a cigar for a day or two. Question, do you think men with beards are sexy? I definitely do. It might have something to do with the nerd chick thing. I don't know, but apparently I'm a minority.

More Gouache

The finished Mushrooms.

A gift for my father's 61st birthday. I was considering writing "Rock On Cod" in that blue patch but later decided against it.

Trying New Things

I've been trying out Gouache for a change and I'm loving it. One of the artists I'm following did some amazing things with gouache and I instantly got jealous and wished I had a set. Instead of going to buy some I started to clean my room to keep my mind off my latest want. Guess what! I found a set of gouache paints! I couldn't believe my luck. The best thing about gouache? It dries to a matte finish unlike its shiny acrylic brother. It also dries fast and goes on thick. I love it, its like it was made for my style of painting.

I decided to do some concept art for "White Space". A good ol' giant mushroom biome.

The photo above was taken by me years ago of my friend Zach. I found it the other day and now its on my art wall.

Of Paper and Alien Festivities

Alien Festival by Becky Hunt, 2011

I dreamt of paper last night. It was a pretty wicked dream. I love it when you dream of surviving some sort of Apocalypse and going to your favourite place. I always end up in an art store. Last night it was that awesome paper store. Oh the fun I had.

Anyway, I spent today cleaning up my art supplies (because I clearly didn't get enough of it while I was asleep). I found the picture above and thought it might amuse. Some aliens watching some native dance of their's. The picture below my sister just presented to me.
